Teeth cleaning is an integral part of good dental hygiene. Twice annual teeth cleaning should be a part of preventive oral healthcare. Along with brushing and flossing, professional teeth cleaning keeps your teeth healthy and your smile bright!

During a teeth cleaning you might have the following:

  • Removal of plaque and tartar
  • Stain removal
  • Fluoride application
  • Polishing teeth, including fillings and crowns
  • Cleaning and adjustment of dentures and partial dentures (as applicable)

When having your teeth cleaned, the dental hygienist uses a scalar to get rid of plaque and tartar around the gum line, as well as in between the teeth. Once this cleaning is done, your teeth are polished with gritty toothpaste to shine them up! If other concerns are discovered – cavities, gum disease of any sort – arrangements are made to see your dentist to discuss treatments for those problems.

If you suffer from gingivitis or periodontal disease your cleaning may differ somewhat. If you have mild to moderate generalized or advanced periodontal disease you may have root planning. Root planning is extensive cleaning of your tooth roots to remove bacteria that causes gum disease. It is usually preceded by a gross debridement, otherwise called “deep cleaning.” Antibiotic gels are used along with root planning to treat periodontal disease. Contributing to gingivitis are:

Tobacco use – a common causes of gingivitis. Research indicates tobacco users are seven times more likely to suffer from gum disease than people who don’t use tobacco.

Poor oral hygiene –  not brushing or flossing regularly

Hormonal changes – including puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and monthly menstruation increases gum sensitivity.

Stress – another cause of gingivitis. Constant stress can weaken your immune system thus impact your ability to fight infection.

Treatment every three months is recommended for periodontal disease, rather than twice annually to ensure oral health is maintained.
